Sewing machines are pieces of electronic equipment that produce sewing, they do this in many ways and can be used to do many types of sewing. There are also some features that some sewing machines have but others do not, these include the auto thread needle which feeds the thread through the needles eye. Then there is the drop in bobbin which enables the sewer to start sewing straight away as the bobbin thread is pulled through automatically. The number of automatic stitches that the sewing machine can produce is also important, this is stated as a simple number and is usually between 10 and 40 stitches. For buttons there are also two features called 1 Step and 4 Step, with 1 Step a special sewing foot is used which holds the button in place and automatically measures the hole from this, the 4 Step feature requires that for each step the sewer turns the dial.

There are also other machines that are similar to sewing machines, these are overlocker, quilting and embroidery machines. The overlocker machine is designed to trim and neaten the edge of the fabric giving a professional finnish, using an overlocker means that fabric will not fray or unwind. Embroidery machines produce high quality embroidery by using heavy zigzag stitches, these are used to create patterns on the fabric which are only possible with embroidery machines. Quilting machines are used for quilt sewing, they need a special quilting table due to the large sizes that quilts generally come in. A common feature with embroidery, overlocker and quilting machines is the drop feed, this allows easy lowering of the feed dogs for free hand sewing. The main brands that make embroidery, quilting and overlocker machines are Brother, Singer, Janome and Toyota.

So when buying a sewing machine there are a few things to look out for, there are lots of standard features like the sewing of buttons, a tension dial, an auto bobbin winder, a built in light, reverse sewing, variable speed foot control and a soft cover for storing the sewing machine. Then there are lots of features that not all sewing machines have, these include the auto thread needle, the the drop in bobbin and the 1 Step or 4 Step features for buttons.
