The main thing to look out for when buying a portable DVD player is the screen size, these vary from around 4 to 10 inches. The portable DVD players with small screens such as 4 inches can be hard to see so it is better to look out for the models with the larger screen sizes, portable DVD players are designed to be used at close range so you do not need a large screen but the larger you can find the better. Most screens on portable DVD players are widescreen so are fine for watching DVD films that are in the widescreen format, they are also measured from corner to corner so the differences in sizes is more than it seems, for instance the difference between a 4 and a 5 inch screen will appear to be more than one inch when you look at the screen.

There are also other features to look out for when buying a portable DVD player, the sound quality is an important aspect so look out for models with Nicam quality sound. Another important feature to look for is multi region compatibility, multi region portable DVD players can play DVD's from anywhere in the world, people often need multi region compatibility if they have DVD films from other countries. Also look out for the type of discs that are compatible with the portable DVD player as there are lots of different types, they include DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW,VCD, SVCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and others. All portable DVD players are compatible with DVD discs, these are the discs that you buy in the shops. DVD-R and DVD-RW are DVD discs that have been copied, most portable DVD players are compatible with DVD-R and DVD-RW discs but some are not so check if that is an important feature to you. The rest of the formats are types of CD which have film copied onto them, these are rarely used so some portable DVD players don't support them.
