High definition is abbreviated to HD and offers a much higher resolution than the standard DVD players. With a higher resolution there is much more detail in the picture and so things look much sharper than they did on standard DVD. The resolution is stated as a number and then a letter such as 1080p, the number states how many pixels are used to produce the video and the higher the number the better as it will have more detail. The letter stands for either interlaced (i) or progressive (p) and the progressive is better as it sends all of the video to the screen with each screen pass while the interlaced only sends half of the video lines. So for the best picture go with a high number and progressive scanning if possible as will offer a very detailed, smooth picture.

Things are not as simple though as they were with the standard DVD's. There are two types of HD DVD player which are the HD-DVD and Blu Ray DVD players and they both offer stunning HD quality but are different kinds of discs and therefore you will need to buy the right type of disc to play in your HD DVD player. They are clearly marked though with the Blu Ray discs having a large blue band at the top of the case with the Blu Ray logo and the HD-DVD discs having a red band at the top of the case with the HD-DVD logo.

You will also need an HD television in order to watch HD quality DVD through an HD DVD player as standard televisions do not have an as high a resolution as is needed to display HD video. But when you have an HD television and DVD player you will enjoy a stunning picture quality and many HD DVD players can upscale standard DVD's into a near HD quality and so you will also be able to keep your current collection of DVD's.

Of the HD DVD formats the Blu Ray format can hold more data and so could well offer more content and a better quality in the future. The Blu Ray format was developed by many electronics manufacturers which include Sony, Apple, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, HP and many others and Sony have used the Blu Ray technology in the Sony Playstation 3 and so if you buy a PS3 you will have a Blu Ray player and will be able to enjoy HD DVD through your Sony Playstation 3.
