Electric toothbrushes are the modern choice for oral hygiene in the UK and have all but replaced the standard toothbrush in the home, this is sue to the fact that they offer much better cleaning and advanced technology. It is also because electric toothbrushes have come down in price allot, you can get a cheap electronic toothbrush easily and once you have one all you have to do is buy refill packs of the heads which are also cheap. A family can even share an electronic toothbrush as the heads are interchangeable and have different colours, the toothbrush holder can be just like the ones used for traditional toothbrushes with each family member having a different colour. There are many popular electronic toothbrush manufacturers and they include Philips, Oral B, Braun and Ultrasonex, Philips are the most popular due to their Sonicare toothbrushes with sonic technology.

Electric toothbrushes are designed to give the best possible cleaning for your teeth, they usually have a timer built in which tells you when you should stop brushing after the recommended time has elapsed. Some electronic toothbrushes also have a pressure sensor to ensure that you do not apply too much pressure, electronic toothbrushes are powerful and should therefore be used gently as the toothbrush has plenty of power to do the work for you. The power of an electronic toothbrush is measured in oscillations, this means how many times the head of the toothbrush carries out it's movement, electronic toothbrushes have their oscillations stated per minute with larger numbers offering faster brushing.

One technology available in electric toothbrushes is Sonicare, this is developed by Philips and offers incredibly good cleaning capabilities and is seen in toothbrushes such as the HX7351. Sonicare works not only with bristle contact but also with dynamic fluid forces which are created by the sonic technology, this sonic technology means that a Sonicare toothbrush will remove much more plaque than other electronic toothbrushes but it will also reach into the hard to reach areas between the teeth and below the gum line. Sonicare toothbrushes with sonic technology offer incredible cleaning of teeth but also have extra soft, end-rounded polished brushes to prevent damage to the gums and teeth so is is safe to use Sonicare with crowns, implants and orthodontics.

Most electric toothbrushes are rechargeable, this means that they run form an internal battery and must be recharged when the battery runs down. The battery of the toothbrush is located in the base as this normally has a power wire so you can easily plug it into a shaver socket in the bathroom, if you do not have a shaver socket then you can get an adaptor so that you can plug it into any mains socket. The life of the battery inside the electric toothbrush is important as they can use quite allot of power, general use is 10-15 brushes per charge so look out for models with longer life batteries as they will last longer.

When your electric toothbrush head wears out you do not need to buy another separate electronic toothbrush as they have detachable heads so you can just buy another head and place it on the electric toothbrush. The heads usually come in refill packs of 2 or 4, these refill packs are cheap so it's a good idea to buy one when your electric toothbrushes head begins to wear out, most electric toothbrushes have a coloured indicator on the bristles telling you how worn out the bristles are. The refill head packs come in quantities because more often than not an electric toothbrush will be used by more than one person, they have different colours on each head so that you can tell who's is who's. Buying refill heads is also very cheap, the cost of the refill heads is about the same as the old standard toothbrushes so once you have purchased the electronic toothbrush the costs remain the same.

So when buying an electric toothbrush there are a few things to think about, things to look for include the speed at which the toothbrush cleans, the battery life and sonic technology such as Sonicare is a very good choice. Then there is the brand, there are Oral B, Philips, Braun and Ultrasonex to choose from with philips being the most popular due to their Sonicare technology.
