There are many different types of cookers, these include the built in gas and electric cookers and also models that are fan assisted. Fan assisted cookers spread the heat around the oven more efficiently and therefore generally cook quicker and more evenly, you will often see on food packaging that they recommend you reduce the cooking times for fan assisted ovens. There are a number of different things to consider when buying an oven, the main things are the size, the colour and design and the fuel type (gas or electric), you can even choose the amount of ovens you want your cooker to have. Most of this will come down the the size and style of your kitchen, whether or not you can have an electric oven depends on whether you have access to the electricity supply, some people prefer gas though so this may not matter. There are two main types of cooker, the free standing and the built in cooker. Built in cookers will fit into the kitchen units in your kitchen, these look as you can buy one that matches your kitchen. The free standing cookers are placed in any available gap you have in your kitchen, there must be be enough vertical and horizontal space for the cooker though.

There are also many different types of cooker, the first is the single oven with combined grill, this is the basic electric or gas oven that combines the oven and grill meaning that you cannot use the oven and grill at the same time. The next type is the single oven with separate grill, this offers a separate oven and grill so that you can use them both at the same time. The next level up is the double oven, this has one smaller oven that is combined with the grill and a second larger oven, this is useful for cooking different dishes at the same time.

Another thing to consider is the hob, there are many different types so it is worth looking to. You can choose between gas and electric for the fuel supply, gas gives instant heat and is easier to control. Electric hobs have two choices, these are the solid plate and ceramic electric hobs. Solid plate hobs offer different sized rings that heat up, most models having different sized plates and the models featuring a red dot in the middle offering faster heat. Ceramic models heat up faster and are easier to clean, the models with a Halogen zone offer almost instant heat. There are also a few other features to look out for, a wok burner is very useful if you like to cook with a wok as they offer a specially designed support to ensure the wok stays stable and hot. Touch controls are also very useful, these have buttons instead of knobs and are more accurate and easier to clean.

The cooker hood is also an important feature to look out for, the cooker hood will take away the smells of cooking and help keep your kitchen clean at the same time. Cooker hoods are designed to match the cooker you have purchased, most of the time a cooker hood is a separate purchase though so keep this in mind. A cooker hood is recommended though as they will take away any smells out of your kitchen, they will also remove steam from the hob. Another useful accessory is the splashback, a splashback is a separate plate of metal that is designed to fit in between the hob and the cooker hood.

Range cookers are a popular alternative to the normal cookers, they offer a traditional design and are much bigger than the regular cookers. Range cookers offer lots of designs, traditional farmhouse designs offer the country kitchen look and the contemporary stainless steel models offer a professional look. The doors on a range cooker also vary, some have porthole windows which allow you to see the food cooking, others have solid doors which have no window. Range cookers can work from a variety of fuel supplies, these include electric, gas and dual fuel. The electric range cookers have easy clean ceramic hobs and are fast to heat up, gas models are slower to heat up in the oven but the hobs offer instant heat. The dual fuel models combine the benefits of the gas hob and the electric oven, these are the most popular range cookers as they offer the advantages of both gas and electric. The big advantage of range cookers is space, they are very large so often have two separate ovens and a separate grill, meaning you can easily cook large meals easily. There are also special features on some range cookers, these include an extra fast wok burner for cooking stir fries and a cast iron griddle that can be used for searing fish and meat. There are also other products that you should consider when buying a range cooker, these are the cooker hood and the backplate. The cooker hood removes smells and steam from your kitchen and the backplate protects your walls from splashes and spillages, both the hood and the backplate are recommended. There are many brands that offer range cookers, these include Rangemaster, Smeg, Belling, Prestige, Canon and Stoves, Rangemaster are by far the most popular due to the sheer choice of Rangemaster range cookers available.

The other type of oven that is very popular is the microwave oven, microwaves are used primarily to heat things up rather than cook them but the combination microwaves can also cook. There are several different types of microwave available, these include the standard microwave which can only defrost and reheat food and can also cook specially designed food, often known as ready meals. The next level up is the microwave that has a built in grill, this can be used to grill food and to brown and crisp your food. The top level is the combination microwave, this offers a convection (hot air) oven that will allow you to cook food including baking and roasting. A combination microwave is a great deal as you can cook in it so you don't need a separate oven, they also offer a grill and a conventional microwave so you have all of the cooking options you will need. There are many brands that sell microwaves including combination microwaves, these include Panasonic, Sharp, AEG, LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sanyo, Neff, Whirlpool, Bosch and many others.

So when choosing to buy a cooker there are allot of options to consider, do you want a built in or free standing cooker, a range cooker with a traditional look and lots of space or a microwave oven which offers lots of features and requires little space. Plus price is an important factor, microwaves are cheap and the range cookers the most expensive, the range cookers are very large though so this is to be expected.
